Meet the Team
Kathlyn Mickel
Founder, Director of Curriculum & Personnel
Kathlyn oversees module content, assignments, reflections, and the edTPA. She also works with supervisors/coaches on candidate evaluations. Kathlyn has worked with a variety of online and traditional programs for over 15 years, supervising candidates, teaching courses, and acting as field director. She has a BA in Psychology/English, an MA in Education, and previously taught middle school ELA. Her goal for NWED is for all our candidates to be given the tools they need to be effective, compassionate educators for all students. Outside of work Kathyn loves to be on the water, kayaking, refurbishing old boats and walking beaches.
Jim Mickel
Founder, Director of Finance & Administration
Jim is responsible for the learning management system, finance and technical support. He has a BA in Finance from the University of the Pacific and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. His background includes working as a school specialist for the State of WA Auditor’s office and CEO of his own company. His goal for NWED is to support candidates’ goals of becoming successful teachers in the most efficient and effective way possible. Outside of work Jim enjoys building projects, restoring boats and spending time with his kids.
Bree Van Horn
Founder, Director of Partnerships & Recruitment
Bree oversees admissions and is the certification officer for all programs. She has worked in admissions since 2008 and has been working with teacher candidates since 2011. Bree has a BA in History from UCLA and an MEd in Counseling from Boston University. Her goal with NWED is to ensure that each candidate in the program has the skills and grit to make a significant impact in their classrooms. In her free time Bree fosters kittens for the local Humane Society, reads, and does projects around her very old house.
Jack Fallat
Coach/Supervisor
Jack has worked as a teacher and administrator for over 40 years after receiving his MA – Education from Duquesne University. His varied career has allowed him to produce/direct middle school plays, host a sports radio talk show, all while acting as director at a private institution. His goal is to affirm candidate’s success, while helping them enjoy the teachable moment and have fun with their students! While not coaching he enjoys hiking in the PNW and staying in touch with his daughters.
Eric Sellereit
Coach/Supervisor
Eric has worked as an instructional coach for the Bellingham School District and as a student teacher supervisor for WWU after retiring as an elementary school teacher. He has a BA and a MA in elementary education from WWU and joined the staff of NWED in the fall of 2019. His goal is to encourage teachers in their strengths and to help them grow as educators through self-reflection and a healthy dose of fun. Outside of work he enjoys golfing and fly fishing, traveling with friends, and his twin granddaughters.
